Here’s what you need to know:
There’s two BIG docos worth your attention. The Last Dance is a compelling 10-part series about the 1997–98 season Chicago Bulls basketball team. It uses this season to examine the life of Michael Jordan, but also to look at the broader culture surrounding basketball and America. It’s great even if basketball isn’t your thing. The series is made for ESPN in the US, but airs everywhere else in the world weekly on Netflix.
The other doco worth a look is the feature doc by Spike Jonze called Beastie Boys Story. I haven’t seen it yet, but it looks great.
It’s a big weekend for Marvel/Avengers stars. There’s a Chris Hemsworth (Thor) film called Extraction on Netflix. It is directed by Joe Russo, one half of the directing team behind Avengers: Endgame. Co-star Chris Evans (Captain America) is in the new Apple 10-part miniseries Defending Jacob, which is also now streaming.
I really liked the new Quibi series Dummy starring Anna Kendrick. It’s a funny, earthy comedy about a woman struggling with her own identity when her boyfriends sex doll starts talking to her. A reminder that Quibi is free on your mobile phones for the next three months, so this is pretty cheap and easy to watch.
And finally - Gangs of London is the new action drama from The Raid director Gareth Evans. It is, as one would expect from Evans, action-packed.
