More details on the Super Rugby/Stan Sports deal

When ABW first referenced this on Monday, details were a little light. Yesterday we found out more about what is going on with Aussie streamer Stan now pivoting to embrace sports.

What
On Free-to-air, Nine will screen a Saturday night Super Rugby match. The rest of the Super Rugby games will be behind the Stan Sport paywall. Until now Super Rugby has not been available on FTA television.

Other games will include: Super W and Wallaroos games, New Zealand's Mitre 10 and South Africa's Currie Cup and club rugby in Sydney's Shute Shield and Brisbane's Hospital Cup. Four club games a season (in a Super Saturday line-up), and finals, will be broadcast on FTA, but everything else will be on Stan.

Why
Sports are grappling with the changing face of television right now. Broadcast networks don’t have the money that they once did to spend on sporting rights and pay TV service Foxtel is declining in numbers (from an already not-high subscriber base). Sporting codes need to balance out getting a good pay day for broadcast rights, along with ensuring that a good pay day won’t limit growth of the sport with low audience numbers.

Rugby Australia made the move with Stan in an effort to attract new fans. Nine are promising a new announcing team, improved on-screen graphics packages, and improved filming techniques (ie drones, increased number of cameras, etc).

How
As mentioned, it’ll be a mix of games being played on Stan owner TV network Nine, with most games available on the newly branded Stan Sport - a channel that will exist within the general entertainment Stan app. But don’t think you’re getting these games for free. It’ll be an add-on for current Stan subscribers who will have to pay an additional monthly fee.
