Cancelled: Supergirl

PLUS: A heck of a lot of trailers. AND: Rogue One TV show lands a new director

RIP Supergirl

The Girl of Steel will see her series come to an end with the upcoming 20-episode season six. Supergirl comes to an end just as spin-off series Lois & Superman is launching on The CW. What’s not clear is whether the producers decided to bring the series to an end or whether the network decided on its fate.

Inarguably, the absolute best thing about this series is Supergirl herself Melissa Benoist. It won’t be long until she’s headlining another series.

COVID lands Rogue One series a new director

Filmmaker Tony Gilroy was set to direct the first three episodes of upcoming Star Wars TV show starring Rogue One character Cassian Andor (Diego Luna). With the series shooting in the UK, the New York-based Gilroy opted against travelling. Black Mirror director Toby Haynes (he directed the U.S.S. Callister episode) was already on the roster to direct on the new series, so will now take over directing the first three episodes.

Gilroy will remain on the production as showrunner and as a writer. Just from New York.

Paramount pivots

US cable channel Paramount Network is pivoting in line with various corporate synergies. It is changing name to Paramount Movie Network and, as a result, has dumped all of its unscripted shows.

Ink Master, Wife Swap and Battle of the Fittest Couples have been cancelled.

Lip Sync Battle and Bar Rescue will be moved to other ViacomCBS-owned channels.

The network has been winding down its scripted series, cancelling the actually quite good 68 Whiskey and American Woman. Shows in development are being moved around ViacomCBS. Its huge success is Yellowstone, which will continue on the network.

Going forward the plan is for one original movie per week, plus quarterly limited series or ongoing series at the scale of Yellowstone.
