Always Be Streaming - 19 June 2020
This weekend delivers Love Victor and a whole lot of Netflix movies
It’s a quiet week for new shows this week. There’s a few reasons for this:
The Emmy nominations deadline closed, so any shows with even a sniff of eligibility (even just craft) will be held back for a bit.
I suspect the streamers are all being a little more strategic about making inventory last with the COVID shutdown of production.
This weekend see’s the launch of the highly anticipated blockbuster game The Last of Us Pt 2 - if you’re not much into gaming you might not be aware of this, but this film will move a tremendous number of copies over the weekend and occupy a lot of potential viewers eyeballs.
That said - Netflix have a bunch of films debuting this weekend...
One Way To Tomorrow look like it’s Turkey doing Before Sunrise but staying on the train. And I’m there for that.
Wasp Network looks like great fun, while Lost Bullet looks like it might have a solid grindhouse vibe to it. And then there’s Feel The Beat which looks like somebody made a movie out of the plot description to the TV show Bunheads.
And then there’s the sole new show worth mentioning: Hulu’s Love Victor. A TV adaptation of the teen romcom Love Simon, the show was moved from Disney+ to Hulu where a show with a gay protagonist would be less likely to upset anyone. The downside of the shift means that the show isn’t available outside of the US.
The general consensus from reviews has been that the spirit of the show is great, but it isn’t as substantial as it should have been.
Mr Iglesias (s2), Marcella (s3), Most Beautiful Thing (s2), The Order (s2), Girls From Ipanema (s2), The Politician (s2)
